Folic acid (folate, vitamin B9) is a vitamin from the B-complex and thus an organic compound which the body needs for vital functions and which it cannot synthesize itself to meet requirements. Therefore, folate is one of the essential substances that must be taken in externally through food. It is widely known that folate makes an important contribution to the maintenance of health: Maternal tissue growth during pregnancy, amino acid synthesis, hematopoiesis, homocysteine metabolism, mental function, immune system and cell division are all supported in this regard. In addition, folate contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. In Germany, however, a full two-thirds of adults do not consume enough folate in their diet and are therefore at risk of deficiency.

Quatrefolic® is a patented premium ingredient which is particularly characterized by its excellent bioavailability. The folate is present in the form of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt (L-5-MTHF). L-5-MTHF is primarily used in the body as a biologically active form of folate at the cellular level for DNA replication, cysteine metabolism, and homocysteine regulation. In addition, this form occurs directly in the bloodstream and is transported across various membranes to tissues and also through the blood-brain barrier. Due to its excellent water solubility, the ingredient Quatrefolic® is perfectly suited for supplementing the diet with folate.

What is the difference between folic acid, vitamin B9 and folate?

Folic acid is a vitamin from the B-complex. Folate and vitamin B9 are synonymous terms for the same substance. So, there is no difference between folic acid, vitamin B9 and folate.

Is folic acid (folate) acidic and can it cause heartburn?

Although folic acid generally acts as an acid in some contexts from a chemical point of view, it does not change the pH value of the body to any relevant extent and therefore does not lead to heartburn. This is due, among other things, to the relatively small amounts that are usually ingested. Even when several milligrams are taken per day, the effect as an acid in the body is still negligible.

At what time of day should I optimally use folate?

The use of the capsules is independent of the time of day. So, you can use them when it suits you best.

What is the best way to store the Folate (Quatrefolic®) capsules?

You can store the capsules at normal room temperature. As long as they are protected from direct sunlight, you are otherwise free to choose the storage location.

Can I open the capsules?

The capsules can be opened safely. You can thus add the contents to a meal or drink, for example.

Folate can be used permanently without any risk. Usually there are no side effects.

As a rule, there are no side effects as long as the recommended dosage is adhered to.

Are there any possible interactions with medications?

When simultaneously taking drugs against cancer (active ingredient methotrexate) and preparations against infectious diseases (active ingredients trimethoprim, proguanil and pyrimethamine), folate should only be consumed as a food supplement after consulting your doctor or pharmacist.
