Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient and is involved in numerous processes in the body, such as cell division, blood formation and nerve function. Relevant quantities of the vitamin are only found in foods of animal origin (e.g. meat, fish, seafood, eggs and dairy products). With a purely plant-based (vegan) diet, hardly any vitamin B12 is absorbed through the food - therefore, it is advisable in this case to take vitamin B12 on a permanent basis. Age-related or illness-related reasons can also lead to an undersupply.
