L-cysteine is a semi-essential amino acid. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is closely related to L-cysteine and can therefore be converted into L-cysteine very easily in the body, which is why N-acetylcysteine can be regarded as the L-cysteine equivalent. In the body, L-cysteine serves, for example, as a basic substance for glutathione synthesis and is a component of hair and nails. In the diet, L-cysteine is partly found in protein-rich foods, but only in very small quantities, which is why the requirement can only be met with a very balanced diet. In addition, L-cysteine serves in the organism as a precursor of taurine, which can positively influence general cardiovascular functions, and is an important source of sulfur. ZeinPharma^®'s N-acetylcysteine can be particularly well absorbed through the intestine and almost completely absorbed and is therefore suitable as an excellent source of L-cysteine. NAC itself acts as an antioxidant in the body and exhibits anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties. Compared to the direct absorption of L-cysteine, the absorption of NAC is more effective and much safer. NAC can also inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress in the organism, and has a cell-protective effect.

In some studies^1,2 the use of NAC to reduce COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) was investigated in more detail and some of the symptoms were reduced. In another study, it was shown that NAC intake can directly increase glutathione levels in the blood.³
