Rosskastanie
Did you know?
The common horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a plant species of the genus Horse Chestnut (Aesculus), native to the Balkans and widespread in Central Europe. The tree can reach a height of 30 m and an age of 300 years. From the middle of the 17th century, cinchona bark was used in Europe for the treatment of alternating fevers. However, since the bark was very expensive at that time, a substitute with similar effects was sought. During this search, it was discovered that horse chestnut, which was already indigenous at the time, could have a similar effect when used correctly, so it was used accordingly over the next few decades. The most important active ingredient in horse chestnut is aescin, which is a mixture of more than 30 different saponins.
Aescin has a vaso-strengthening, anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory effect. This can be achieved, among other things, by sealing the vascular walls of the veins, modifying their permeability to reduce leakage of fluid into the tissues and accelerate the drainage of water retention from the tissues. In addition, horse chestnut can strengthen the immune system, improve physical well-being, maintain healthy skin and protect against stomach irritants.
Several studies have analyzed in more detail the control of blood pooling in the extremities due to the venotrophic action of aescin.1,2 In these studies, a reduction in leg swelling and varicose veins was also observed by taking horse chestnut extract.1,2
