The common evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) is a herbaceous plant up to one meter high that often grows along roadsides or uncultivated areas in Germany. Its large, yellow flowers give off an intense, sweet fragrance, especially in the evening hours. A special phenomenon of the evening primrose is the rapid opening of its flowers. The plant opens them in a smooth movement within a few minutes. The evening primrose was originally native to America, from where it was introduced to Europe as an ornamental plant in 1620. In North America, Native Americans used the seeds of the evening primrose, which were pounded into a paste, as a remedy. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the plant was cultivated in Europe as a vegetable and its roots, but also its leaves, flowers and seeds were used as food. The taproot was often colloquially called "ham root" or "ham herb" because of its pink color when cooked. Typically, the plant's oil contains between 65-80% of diunsaturated linoleic acid and 8-14% of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is an omega-6 tri-unsaturated fatty acid. Since the high-quality evening primrose oil is usually very expensive, cheaper hemp oil is sometimes used instead, which, however, has a lower GLA content.

Evening primrose oil contains the essential fatty acids linoleic acid and linolenic acid. Most of the oil is linoleic acid and a smaller part is linolenic acid.
Linoleic acid is an omega-6 diunsaturated fatty acid that is an essential nutrient for the body to obtain from the diet. In the body, various other important fatty acids are synthesized from linoleic acid via intermediate stages. Linolenic acid is a tri-unsaturated omega-6 fatty acid that can exist in a variety of forms. The gamma-linolenic acid contained in evening primrose oil, like linoleic acid, is essential for the body. Partly it can be synthesized from linoleic acid. In the body, linolenic acid plays an important role in various biochemical processes.
