D-ribose belongs chemically to the sugars and is a component of the nucleotides. Nucleotides, in turn, are the basic building blocks of nucleic acids DNA and RNA, the genetic material of all living things. D-ribose is also very important for our energy metabolism, because D-ribose is a part of ATP, which is the most important energy carrier of the cells. It is formed in the mitochondria (the "power plants of the cells") and serves as a general "energy currency" that can be used everywhere in the organism.
