Astaxanthin is also known as "Haematococcus pluvialis" and is classified as green algae. If the alga gets into a kind of emergency situation, a survival mechanism is activated and astaxanthin is produced. For example, it protects itself from UV radiation, dryness or too high a salt content in the water. Astaxanthin can also be absorbed through food if you eat enough salmon, shrimps or even lobster.
